On Monday, March 31, 2025, UMEME officially transferred electricity distribution operations to the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL).
However, the transition comes at a time when many communities in Lwengo and other districts remain unconnected to the national grid, raising concerns over delayed service delivery.
Residents in Lwengo report long-standing promises of electrification that have yet to be fulfilled. Many villages still rely on costly and unreliable alternatives, leaving businesses and households struggling.
Local leaders are urging UEDCL to prioritise rural electrification, ensuring that underserved areas finally receive access to power.
Meanwhile, affected communities are calling for transparency and accountability in the new management to avoid prolonged delays.
As UEDCL takes over, Community Transformation Foundation Network (COTFONE) says there are so many questions as to whether this transition will bring the long-awaited electricity to the people who need it most?
Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
